THE STORY:

The East Oakland PRIDE Lion’s PRIDE Afterschool Academy (LPA) will provide a safe, supportive afterschool program for 100 low-income students from this high-need East Oakland neighborhood. The youth development-based program design will address students’ academic and enrichment needs while promoting better attendance in school. Academic support will include literacy, homework help, academic enrichment, and support for English Language Learners, all linked to school-day programming. Enrichment activities will include sports, fitness, STEM, visual/performing arts, and educational garden-based activities.

When students enroll into the program, they select classes that are offered as a part of their weekly schedule. Every student is required to attend one hour of academic support and one hour of enrichment or recreation class each day. Each enrichment or recreation class chosen is offered twice a week, for an hour at a time. A typical weekly schedule for students includes up to four different enrichment and recreation classes. Ballet Folklorico is one of the classes offered as an option for students.

The annual after school program schedule is divided into three sessions. Each session (Fall – September – December, Spring – January – March, Final – April – June) students select and are enrolled in the enrichment and academic classes offered. Each session culminates in a student showcase where students are able to perform and display the variety of artistic pieces they have created in their classes. As a result of this selection process and rotating schedule, approximately 80 1st-5th Grade students have participated in Ballet Folklorico.

Over the year, Ballet Folklorico has become an essential part of the performing arts option offered during LPA. 1st-5th Grade students participating in this in class were able to work closely with the folklorico instructor to learn new dance steps, routines and choreography in preparation for the student showcase presented several times throughout the school year. At these showcases, students wore beautiful traditional costumes from the various regions of Mexico that were provided by the instructor.

In addition to students’ ability to participate in the creation and performance of dance, Ballet Folklorico provides a cultural connection that resonates with much of the school community. We promote cultural diversity as a part of our program, and Ballet Folklorico allows the culture of the Latino community at our school to be highlighted, celebrated and valued as a positive and empowering reason for students to be proud. It also provides the opportunity for other cultures to learn and enjoy the offerings from a different culture. With this ability to learn and enjoy one another’s culture, we hope to bridge the divide that often exists between different cultural groups in East Oakland.

Although, we have had success with Ballet Folklorico as a part of our after school program, unfortunately, due to recent loss of funding we will be unable to continue offering this class. With the $5,000 r, we will be able to pay for a highly qualified Ballet Folklorico instructor for the entire program. This will allow 80 of our students experience the art of dancing and the joy of performing.
