BENEFITING: DANCE BALTIMORE INC
I truly believe children need love and support beyond the classroom in order to be successful students. One way to show love is to start with promoting healthy lifestyles in the community.
In 2008, I invited members of my former college Hip-Hop dance team to spend the entire day with my sixth grade social studies students. Seeing the engagement of my students, their smiles, and their motivation to do better during and after that experience showed me how I could do my part in bettering the lives of students in Baltimore City. The opportunity to express yourself and the discipline of dance creates leaders in and out of the classroom.
Three years later, with my amazing dance partner, what started as a school club has grown into
- an after-school program at seven sites,
- a city-wide dance team,
- trips to colleges,
- a nationally recognized dance competition show and benefit,
- an annual college scholarship, and
- Saturday dance workshops for students, families, teachers, and the community.
With the help of local Baltimore City school teachers, community leaders, and dancers from all over the country, the Baltimore Dance Crews Project has made it its mission to (1) support student achievement, (2) build community, (3) encourage creativity, and (4) promote healthy lifestyles.
After completing my third year of teaching, I decided to dedicate my life to the students of Baltimore beyond the classroom. This year I plan to continue with the programs established across the city of Baltimore and establish the Baltimore Dance Crews Project as a non-profit. With the help of so many people, I hope to impact more students to better the future of Baltimore. In the future I hope to open a community dance center so the community has a home to not only dance, but to support student achievement and healthy lifestyles.
Your donations will go to BDCP's supporter Dance Baltimore, Inc. Dance Baltimore is a 501 (c)(3) that supports dance organizations across the city. Your donations will assist a living stipend and cover costs of establishing a non-profit in the state of Maryland.
In addition, I am willing to lead dance workshops anywhere to raise money for this cause. I have taught dance workshops in Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington DC. You can see example workshops in the video provided or see our youtube.
