Baltimore Youth Arts is an artist-run, nomadic, after school program that provides artistic and professional opportunities to youth, ages 12-19, in Baltimore, MD. Our mission is to assist young people in gaining the creative, personal, and educational skills that will enable them to become leaders in their communities. We provide artistic and entrepreneurial opportunities to youth so that they can hone their talents and use them to shape the world.
We believe that all youth need access to programming and opportunities that offer skill building while promoting individual growth. The arts are a vehicle for youth to explore their agency; transform themselves and their surroundings; use their voice and communicate their thoughts and ideas; re-connect to their communities; make new connections to peers and adults; identify and manage their emotions; and gain a wealth of hard and soft skills. Our mission is not merely to provide arts classes, but to allow participants the opportunity to access their full potential so that they feel equipped to advocate for themselves and others.
Right now BYA provides arts classes at four locations:
- The Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center (Baltimore, MD)
- The Thomas JS Waxter Children’s Center (Laurel, MD)
- The Lillian S Jones Recreation Center (Baltimore, MD)
- Gilmor Homes (Baltimore, MD)
BYA Phase 2!!
In the past 6 months we have received the generous support from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, independent donors, and volunteers to provide programming to 30-48 youth per week! The next phase of our program is to rent a space in LE MONDO (http://www.lemondo.org/) to house the BYA Community Studio.
The transitional lives of many of our youth participants demonstrate the immediate need for BYA to open a community studio that will allow for the continuance of relationships built between young people and BYA staff. For example, many youth return to juvenile justice facilities after being back in the community for short periods of time. Our goal is to support youth in their transition back to the community by maintaining mentoring relationships and providing arts programming, professional opportunities, and job skills training.
If we are able to raise $14,000.00 we will be able to open the BYA Community Studio and pay for a year's worth of utilities! The Studio will be used to offer additional arts classes and employ around 12 youth per year.
Any additional money will go towards other costs such as:
- $50/week to supply materials for all of our classes
- $12,000 to provide 12 youth with transitional employment each year
- $7,000/year for guest artist/local professional stipends
Everyone that contributes to this campaign will be named an individual donor on the BYA website!
If you donate...
$50 you will receive a post card with an image of youth artwork
$100 you will receive the first publication of BYA participant artwork
$200 you will receive the first two publications of BYA participant artwork
If you donate more than this we will give you everything above and come up with a really creative present for you because you clearly rule.
All donations made to this campaign are tax deductible through Fusion Partnerships, BYA's fiscal sponsor.
Thank you for your support!
