Changing Lives with Jam Sessions
Since 2012, Banding Together, has held 84 Jam Sessions in the San Diego area benefitting over 150 youth with special needs including autism, cerebral palsy, Asperger’s syndrome, William syndrome, and Down syndrome. The purpose of the Jam Session program is to provide a music therapy group and mentoring program for youth with special needs through one-hour music therapy groups (aka as “Jam Sessions”) at a local community venue to promote socialization, emotional expression, community inclusion and communication. During this group, these participants join together to sing and play instruments with a different guest artist musician each week. The participants are joined by volunteers in the community who act as mentors in the program. We are committed to making sure that Jam Sessions are provided free to all participants.
Giving the Gift of Music Therapy and Adapted Lessons
Banding Together has helped needy families with children with special needs by awarding 79 scholarships totaling over $48,000 since 2010.
More Programs for Teens and Young Adults Are Needed
With the number of teens with special needs on the rise increasing by 28,000 in the past 10 years in California and funding for special needs and programs being cut, there is a huge need in the community for social skills programs. "I can't tell you how many parents came up to me after our final Jam Session to tell me how much their son or daughter benefitted from the program," said music therapist Julie Guy. One father said, "This is the one thing my daughter looks forward. Everyday she asks if she gets to go to the Jam Session. If I could, I would bring her every day for this."
Jam Sessions serve those individuals whose families have to prioritize numerous other therapies and financial demands. Often after age 22 the number of supported services decreases significantly. Individuals with special needs often have difficulty with communication and emotional expression, both of which are naturally assisted through music.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to continue supporting Banding Together's FREE programs (including Jam Sessions, scholarships, Soundcheck Jams and Camp Jam) for youth and young adults with special needs. Without your generous support, these programs could not continue.
