Stuff About Me:

Welcome to my journey to Ironman Wisconsin 2015. I am raising funds for a cause close to my heart, SBS (Shaken Baby Syndrome) my great niece Kyra is a survivor of this crime. My hope is to raise funds to help the non-profit organization my niece (Kyra's mom) started, One Shake is All it takes.  Their mission is to eliminate Shaken Baby Syndrome through awareness and education to the public.  One Shake Is All It Takes strives to educate parents, babysitters, & other caregivers about the dangers of Shaken Baby Syndrome & offer them coping strategies.  They also seek to help advocate for Shaken Baby Syndrome victims & their families by helping them find resources they need along their journey.  Please consider helping with a donation.   To learn more about the organization, visit www.oneshakeisallittakes.org.

Kyra’s Story- Surviving Shaken Baby Syndrome

On June 5, 2012 a beautiful, healthy 7lb baby girl named Kyra Lyn was born. She was the second daughter to be born to high school sweethearts, David & Kelsie. Her sister, Lexi was two years old when she was born and they were attached from that the first moment they met.

Kyra was diagnosed with Colic when she was around two months old. She was considered a “high crier”, crying up to five hours each day. When Kyra was three months old, her mommy had to go back to work. She worked evenings while her husband worked days. Her mom thought she was doing the best by her family, allowing them to save on daycare and avoiding daycare providers “raising” their daughters.

On October 28, 2012 Kelsie received a frantic call, at work, from her husband. He stated that Kyra was having a seizure and he was bringing her into the emergency room where Kelsie worked. As the only registration staff, Kelsie had to register her own four month old to be seen in the emergency room. Kyra arrived at the local ER and was limp & blue. She was immediately hooked up to oxygen, IV’s and other life-saving equipment and she also had a CT scan. Kyra then began having constant seizures for more than an hour before she was airlifted to St Mary’s hospital in Rochester, MN.

Kyra was diagnosed with non-accidental head trauma also known as Shaken Baby Syndrome or Abusive Head Trauma. Kyra had two subdural hematoma’s (bleeding around the brain) one in the front right and one in the back left, retinal hemorrhages (bleeding in the eyes), and a midline shift of her brain. After 4 days of suffering hundreds of seizures, Kyra had a craniotomy, which is surgery to remove the blood from around her brain.

Kyra suffers left sided weakness due to the right sided brain damage. She went through months of physical therapy, occupational therapy and neurology appointments (EEGs and MRI’s). She had to wear a thumb splint for a few months due to tightness & clinching of her hand.

Now at 2 years old, Kyra is walking, talking and the happiest, sweetest little miracle! She still has break through seizures (seizures that occur even while on seizure medicine) and her MRI’s show significant brain atrophy (death of brain cells). Kyra will be evaluated in the future by behavior specialist for sensory and behavioral issues.

Lexi is now four years old and received 1.5 years of therapy after being diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder due to the abuse of her baby sister & the loss of her father.

On October 30, 2012 Kyra’s father confessed that he had shaken Kyra because he became frustrated with her crying but later took back his confession. His case went to trial and he was convicted of malicious punishment of a child, a felony, on April 29, 2014. He was sentenced to 57 months in prison, the maximum allowed by Minnesota state sentencing guidelines, on July 11th 2014.  On September 30, 2014 his parental rights to both children was terminated.

Kelsie filed for divorce in January 2013 and the divorce was finalized in August 2013. She started a non-profit organization called One Shake Is All It Takes in May 2013 because she wanted to prevent other children from being abused like her daughter was. Shaken Baby Syndrome is 100% preventable and increased awareness and education is key!
