BENEFITING: TRAVIS MANION FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2013
It seems just yesterday in 2007 that I laced up for my first MCM to honor the memory of Travis Manion just a short time after he made the ultimate sacrifice when he lost his life on April 29th 2007. With the support of family, friends and other team members along the route, I crossed the finish line. Crossing the finish line of any hard race is emotional, however, for anyone who has ever seen or experienced the finish of the Marine Corps Marathon, you know you have the chance to say THANK YOU to the Marines standing at the finish handing you a medal and congratulating you!! As we celebrate our accomplishment, however, it gives each finisher from Team Travis and Brendan the chance to reflect on the reason why we run...to Honor the Fallen by Challenging ourselves, the living!
This year, six years later, I am running my sixth MCM; this year, Kevin, my 24 year old nephew (and a much more accomplished cross country runner than myself) and his friend Jim (Bakey), both of whom have run the 10K in the past and this year will lace up to run their first Marine Corps Marathon. I suspect they will be waiting for me at the finish line, but they, too, have been inspired to Challenge themselves to Honor the Fallen.
Through this team effort, we are raising funds for the Travis Manion Foundation. This organization, founded by Travis's late Mom, visionary and dear friend, Janet Manion. The Travis Manion Foundation, inspired by Travis’ words “If Not Me, Then Who…” has an overriding goal of Honoring the Fallen by Challenging the Living. The foundation has built a national reputation for using innovative programs that transform communities through service and how we honor those who serve.
Selfless service is the heart beat of our organization. We characterize our programs and impact as the "If Not Me, Then Who..." movement. The movement serves as a catalyst for activating service based on the examples provided by our Fallen Heroes. Our three main programs the 9/11 Heroes Run, Character Does Matter, and Challenge Grants allow us to make a tangible difference in the lives of our military service members and families, while helping to create a generation of future leaders. Your support allows the foundation to continue to expand its reach into communities across our country.
The "If Not Me, Then Who..." movement will motivate us through each step!
So, please, if you are so inspired, please support our participation in the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon for Team Travis & Brendan. If you can, take a moment while we are running on October 27th to remember one special Hero you have who answered the words "If Not Me, Then Who..." to serve this great nation and protect the very freedom that allows us to run 26.2 miles!!
(PS. Rich is running the 10K also and then races around the route with other of our family to support and cheer us which I think may actually be harder than running the race!)
Team Travis and Brendan is in its 7th year as an official charity partner with the Marine Corps Marathon. On October 27, 2013 team members will fight the cold weather and run to raise money and awareness for the Travis Manion Foundation. Show your support for our team!
Warriors for Freedom, Brothers Forever
Inspired by best friends, United States Naval Academy roommates, and Fallen Heroes, Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion and LT (SEAL) Brendan Looney, Team Travis & Brendan (T&B) is our grassroots program, bringing the “If Not Me, Then Who…” movement to your local community. All across the country, people are taking their unique interests, passions, and talents and transforming them into community fundraisers and athletic endeavors.
