Barbara Frescatore, age 49, was diagnosed a month ago with chondrosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. For years she has suffered from back and hip pain with no clear cause until now. Unfortunately the delay in diagnosis has allowed her cancer to metastasize, leaving her limited options in treatment. Because of the extensiveness of her metastasis her only treatment option is a procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. This radical amputation is called a hemipelvectomy. They would remove her left leg and half of her pelvis. Due to internal organ involvement, she will also require a colostomy and a urostomy for bowel and bladder function. Her medical insurance will cover actual medical costs, however she is left with co-pays, transportation to Minnesota, and lodging while they do the testing required preadmission. In addition to this, her home will need to be renovated to accommodate a handicap accessible bathroom in the downstairs portion of the house. For years Barb worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant caring for others in a local nursing home, never imagining that she would one day be the one needing assistance. Please help Barb as she wages this fight against this terrible disease and the long road to rehabilitation that lies ahead.
