Hi Family and Friends,
I have been selected to participate in an 18-month global leadership program. The program, funded by the U.S. Department of State, is a joint venture between Global Kids, One World Now (based in Seattle), and The National Center for Global Engagement (NC4GE).
Through NC4GE’s Bardoli Global Scholars Program, the students (10 from Global Kids and 10 from One World Now) will learn global leadership skills, receive science and technology training, conduct social entrepreneurship ventures, and participate in career readiness training.
Most excitingly, this program will give me the opportunity to study abroad in Kenya for four weeks this summer as a Bardoli Global Scholar. While on the trip, I will learn about Kenyan culture, work with young Kenyan leaders to introduce technology to their communities, and most remarkably, represent the U.S. Department of State as 2011 American Youth Leadership Program participants!
The two sets of youth, Kenyan and American, will work together to lead training sessions that build technical competencies - such as blogging, making videos, using social networks, podcasting, etc - that will serve as the activist tools through which social injustices that the two groups of young people identify are addressed. We will also explore how science and technology are used to address social justice and community issues.
