BENEFITING: BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SANTA BARBARA INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 07, 2015
The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara is a great cause.
My name is John Gavin, and I’m a runner. Every now and then, I run a couple of miles… barefoot.
A few weeks ago, as I finished a morning run barefoot, I had a crazy idea. What about running the 2015 Santa Barbara Veteran’s Day Half Marathon barefoot? I mean, it sort of makes sense. I like to run, I’m an Armed Forces veteran, and it’s the kind of quirky thing that sort of fits my personality.
Another thought occurred to me: What about running the Half Marathon as a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara? This made even more sense especially since my wife and I are supporters of Boys and Girls Clubs. We are both inspired by the great work they do with kids including at-risk and low-income youth. Instead of just hanging out on the street after school, these young people have a safe place to go to feel encouraged, develop their minds, and just have fun being a kid.
Let’s be honest – 13.1 miles is a long way to run barefoot. This is my first attempt at this, and I don’t know if I can do it.
What I do know is this: The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara is a great cause. If anyone deserves our financial support, these kids from our community do! If I can attempt the Half Marathon barefoot, I ask you to sponsor me in this run that I am doing for the kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara.
Thank you for your support.
