EVENT DATE Jun 20, 2015
The Barry McCool Award for modern European languages was set up to recognise excellence in languages among final year students at Barry's own secondary (high) school - St Columba's College in Donegal, Ireland. The school was very important to Barry, he achieved excellent acacademic results and he is remembered fondly among the staff. Barry studied French and Spanish at the school, and went on to study German at university, picking up Dutch and Italian along the way in his career and travels. His skills in languages reflected his attitude to life - work hard at what you are good at and don’t stop learning new things*.
The award was granted for the first time in May 2015, to Arlene Bonner, following evaluation of 19 nominees. The award consists of a modest travel bursary [just FYI it’s €400, and the recipient is free to spend as he/she pleases...I thought it would be better to encourage the person to use it travel....but that’s hard to enforce], a personal memento, and a perpetual trophy designed by Barry's brother Alan .
Initial funds raised following Barry's death in 2013 will fund the award for several years, but greater financial resources would expand the base, scope and impact of the award. It could be more money to travel or study abroad, multiple awards or expanded to other places Barry studied at – of which there are quite a few!
