Three years ago I sat at a cafeteria table and first met a quiet, shy young boy from the Dominican Republic. From the first interaction I could tell he was a quiet leader, and I've watched him develop into a mature, kind young man with an incredible work ethic and magnetic leadership. While Engineering was a pipe dream his freshman year, he is now well on his way to a strong college application and that dream could soon become a reality.
The juniors recently did a poetry exercise, and I thought I'd share his inspiring words with you:
"Just because I am Dominican, it doesn't mean I speak Spanish, doesn't mean I'm illegal, doesn't mean I'm a loud person, I am a well educated person.
Just because I am a boy, it doesn't mean I like sports, doesn't mean I'm crazy for girls, doesn't mean I cant do my homework, I am a friendly person.
Just because I am young, it doesn't mean I don't care, doesn't mean I'm that I don't need to worry about anything."
I hope you will join in supporting the Team iMentor Challenge, which supports mentorship for more inspiring young men and women like my mentee. Our goal is not just to show them the doors, but to give them the life tools to break them down and harvest the fruit on the other side.
