BENEFITING: FRIENDS OF NINOS DE GUATEMALA
ORGANIZER: FRIENDS OF NINOS DE GUATEMALA
EVENT DATE: Sep 19, 2014
Hello Friends & Family!
As you may know, I’m currently volunteering with a great organization named Niños de Guatemala (NDG). NDG is a nonprofit working to provide quality education to those who need it most in the communities surrounding Antigua. Since its founding in 2006, it has opened two primary schools that now serve more than three hundred Guatemalan children and their families.
As a volunteer, I am teaching and helping with various workshops: in art, dance, sports, and English. (Picture me teaching dance class). Despite living in San Lorenzo, a very impoverished community, and dealing with the related challenges, the children come to school eager to learn, play, and socialize. See the following short videos:
It has been such an amazing experience working with these children. I am surrounded by laughter every day, and the kids generously express their appreciation for the volunteers and staff through frequent smiles, high fives, hugs, and even little gifts (bracelets, artwork, etc). The school even has a social worker and a psychologist to help the kids and their parents with social-emotional issues, which is a unique and rare resource in many Guatemalan schools.
In 2015, NDG is hoping to launch its first básico program, the equivalent of a middle school in the United States or the first three years of high school in Europe. Right now, only one in ten Guatemalan children who enter the education system actually graduates from básico due to financial constraints and limited access to proper schools. However, people with a básico diploma earn more than twice as much as those without one, making it a key step in breaking the cycle of poverty through education (Source: USAID).
To support this project, I’ve started an online fundraiser through the website, Crowdrise. NDG needs to raise $5,000 for básico textbooks and classroom supplies before they can get their program underway, and I would like to give as much as I can to assist them. In order to do this, though, I need your help!
Please support me in this wonderful cause and:
1). Donate now through my Crowdrise page: https://www.crowdrise.com/fundraiser/edit/basicobasics/sarahmitchiner
Just click “Donate to This Fundraiser” and make a contribution using Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Even ten dollars goes a long, long way in Guatemala!
2). Forward this email to anyone else who might like to donate.
It’s helpful to include a short message at the beginning explaining how you know me, as it feels more personal.
3). Share a link to my fundraiser through Facebook, Twitter, etc. with a request for donations. Go ahead and tag me if you like!
To learn more about NDG’s work, please visit their website, like their Facebook page, or check out this short documentary: http://vimeo.com/92343297.
If you have any questions about the fundraiser or NDG as a whole, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you so much in advance for any support you are able to give!
FRIENDS OF NINOS DE GUATEMALA -
With our first class of sixth graders having graduated from primary school this year, NDG has made the exciting decision to launch our own básico (or middle) school program! Now, our students will be able to receive three more years of quality education, drastically improving their chances of finding stable, well-paid jobs as adults.
To make our básico program a reality, though, we need your support.
Right now, we're fundraising for all of the necessary materials for our básico classes. If we reach our goal of $5,000, we'll be able to purchase textbooks, classroom supplies, and more. Donate today to help us break the cycle of poverty through education!
