Apex for Youth is raising money for its basketball and mentoring initiatives for underserved youth in NYC!
For over 21 years, Apex has provided one-on-one mentoring for middle school and high school youth. Three years ago, it started a basketball program for an elementary school in Chinatown to help younger kids receive guidance from adults and prepare them for mentoring.
The response from the children, families and schools has been tremendous. This fall, the program will grow to four schools throughout Chinatown and the Lower East Side with over 200 kids trained by 40 volunteers each week. Students that participate in the basketball program are 20% more proficient in Math and English than those not in the program. Our goal is to continue expanding the program to foster a stronger bond amongst youth in this culturally diverse community.
During the summer, Apex hosts a basketball league with the Dynasty Project called, "We Run as One" (WRAO), where Apex and other neighborhood teams compete. The league not only keeps kids physically active while they're away from school, but also engages parents and people in the community to attend and watch.
With this fundraiser, Apex seeks to create new programming for middle school graduates of the Apex basketball program to maintain their engagement beyond elementary school.
This fundraiser will:
1) Launch the Apex/Dynasty Project Middle School Program
2) Grow the Apex Basketball Program and the We Run as One Summer League
3) Support Apex One-on-One Mentoring
Help us bring fun, mentorship, friendly competition, and the tools for a healthy lifestyle to kids in this diverse community!
