BENEFITING: Food For The Poor, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Mar 17, 2013
On March 17, I will be running 26 miles up a mountain and through a sand pit at the 24th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March, located at the White Sands Missile Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico. The memorial march commemorates the forced march of American and Filipino prisoners of war by the Japanese during World War II. The 63-mile march began with 72,000 prisoners from the southern end of the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines on April 9, 1942. The horrible conditions and harsh treatment of the prisoners during the Bataan Death March resulted in an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 deaths. Among the survivors was my grandfather, Colonel Ben Skardon. Colonel Skardon, at age 95, will walk several miles of the course this year with our team of family members and friends known as "Ben's Brigade." Ben's Brigade is raising money for Food For The Poor (FFP). FFP is the largest international relief and development organization in the United States and one of Colonel Skardon's favorite charities. Founded in 1982, their interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poorest of the poor in 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Their programs provide housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief and micro-enterprise assistance in addition to feeding hundreds of thousands of people each day.
