THE STORY:

In Benin, only 27% of girls make it to middle school and fewer than 2% of girls make it to vocational training or University. Research shows that educating girls not only increases a country's per capita income growth rate, but that incidences of HIV/AIDS, infant and maternal mortality rates all fall when girls' education rates climb. For example, it is estimated that 2.8 million children's lives could have been saved in 2013 alone, had their mothers received a secondary school education.

Secondary school and higher education for girls is critical to Africa's future. There is a growing consensus that the most cost-effective way to help African nations reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for their citizens is to support education for girls. Investment in adolescent girls' education provides a multitude of diverse benefits for girls, their families, and their communities.

The Batonga Foundation supports girls that have been orphaned by AIDS, are disabled, extremely poor, or otherwise disadvantaged yet are driven to succeed despite their circumstances. The Batonga Foundation helps to empower 134 girls in Benin by providing school fees, remedial courses, school supplies, books, a backpack, school lunch, uniform, and enrollment in a mentoring program so they can remain in school and become leaders in transforming Africa!
