Why Save Bats?
Bats are clean, gentle and intelligent, they are vital to the ecosystem, and they enhance our lives in many ways. Fruit and nectar bats bring us approximately 450 commecial products and over 80 different medicines through seed dispersal and pollination. Up to 98% of all rainforest regrowth comes from seeds that have been spread by fruit bats. Insect-eating bats are literal vacuum cleaners of the night skies, eating millions upon millions of harmful bugs. They protect us by eating insect-pests that destroy crops as well as insects that cause human disease.
In less than five years, over five-million bats have died from White Nose Syndrome and scientists aren't even close to finding a cure. Currently we are the only non-profit organization actively seeking to save bats in danger of extinction from White Nose Syndrome by creating assurance colonies. We have the expertise to care for them for long periods of time in captivity, but we do not have the funding to build a facility large enough to house several affected species to keep them safe until a cure is found.

What's a Bat World?
The first phase is completed: The Bat Castle.
Please help us complete the second phase: A New Sanctuary!
The new Bat World Sanctuary facility will include expansive indoor-outdoor flight enclosures for the bats, and will be large enough to accept more bats who are relinquished from the exotic pet trade as well as those who are retired from zoos and research. In the past three years dozens of bat zoo exhibits have closed, leaving hundreds of bats in dire need of sanctuary. Sadly, many of these bats end up in the exotic pet trade where their 25 year life expectancy is often cut short to less than a year. Bat World desperately needs to expand in order to take in more of these helpless animals, before a worse fate befalls them.
The new facility will also be capable of housing assurance colonies of bat species in jeopardy of extinction due to White Nose Syndrome. Bat World Sanctuary is the only facility to successfully maintain a reproductive colony of insectivorous bats for almost two decades, and we are the only bat conservation organization currently stepping up to the plate to house assurance colonies of bats in peril. We have the expertise to house several species of bats and keep them safe until a cure is found and the environment is cleansed.
