The Bay Area Alliance for Youth and Families is a community coalition that has been serving the Bay Area of Houston for more than 13 years. Our mission statement is to “unite and mobilize a community to create an alcohol and drug-free future for our youth.” The Alliance has seen much growth in the last 6 years and now has a campaign entitled “Be the Reason” in which they encourage parents to be the reason their kids don’t drink. Different community groups appear in monthly ads running in local publications taking a stand to Be the Reason. The Alliance also coordinates twice-yearly Medication Take Back events in the Bay Area of Houston and have collected over 12,500 pounds of medications in 13 events since 2010. The Alliance also coordinates one of nine pilot projects across Texas through the Texas Healthy Adolescent Initiative at Clear View HS. Through this, the organization has created a smaller group called SALSA - Student Adult Leadership Service Alliance - that is working to pair youth and adults as they address the risk factors of substance abuse, mental health, and transition to adulthood.
