We are raising funds specifically for research data storage in the cloud! Help us reach our goal of $3,000!

Mountain lions (also called pumas) are the last remaining apex predator in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the top of the food chain, providing an essential role for the long term health and stability of our ecosystems. Bay Area lions help keep deer populations in check, and reduce disease in the system, including those like lyme disease that affect humans. However, as rapid Bay Area development continues to expand into lion habitat, human-lion conflicts are getting worse -- impacting local communities and threatening the survival of the region’s lion populations.

The Bay Area Puma Project (BAPP) is a study of mountain lions in the Bay Area using the latest technologies, including GPS/accelerometer collars, genetics analysis, camera arrays, and GIS mapping. The rigorous science is paired with compelling outreach and education programs for local communities, schools, citizen scientists and outdoors lovers.

Our goal with this important work is to advance the conservation of complete ecosystems, by helping communities learn how to co-exist with wildlife, especially our local mountain lions. The current focus of BAPP is centered on our North Bay and Peninsula study regions, ranging from the Peninsula (San Mateo County) to Marin, Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties. We believe that with good science, a strong voice, and a collaborative approach, we can make real progress toward reducing conflict, protecting our native top predator, and helping to preserve the unique and beautiful ecosystems that provide so much value for this region.
