THE STORY:

We've got a bunch of kids of all ages and skill levels who want to bang on stuff. We've got adults who want to motivate these kids and maybe make some noise, too! Bay Ratz Marching Battery coming at you, soon, Gulf Coast!! A letter from our fearless leader : Dear Internet, “There’s nothing for kids to do in this town!!” That phrase is said often and in a lot of places but it couldn’t be truer for my town. I live in Bay St Louis MS, ground zero for Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in 2005. The hurricane took our homes, schools, and even lives but it also took our kids musical instruments and a lot of the music educators. We’ve done well rebuilding houses, businesses, infrastructure, but unfortunately the kids and the arts have fallen lower on the priority list. And that’s a shame considering our rich musical heritage and proximity to New Orleans and Mobile. Well I’m going to do something about it. I’m going to start a drumline. When I was a teenager I was the definition of “at risk youth”. I came from a poor, single working parent household and basically had the ability to run wild. Alcohol, drugs, and crime were an ever-present option except for one thing, I was on a drumline. A drumline led by outstanding instructors, who insisted on discipline, character, and pride. That drumline saved me and I’ve never forgotten the lessons I learned while being a part of it. I don’t know if a drumline will help any kids here but I know it will give them an opportunity. An opportunity to be part of something bigger than themselves. An opportunity to learn discipline, cooperation, responsibility and best of all MUSIC! I’ve spread the word and have a lot of interest from kids and adults. I’ve also realized something important…I need HELP!! Specifically, I need drums, basses, tenors, snares, cymbals, cases and carriers. I also need extra equipment. Sticks, mallets, drum stands, music stands, extra drum heads, practice pads and beginner to intermediate percussion education literature. Other than the occasional hurricane our weather is awesome. With awesome weather comes lots of parades and festivals. Ever heard of something called Mardi Gras? So opportunities to perform are abundant year round and I plan on taking advantage of that by playing every chance I get. But again, I’m going to need some help to get these kids out there. Below is a list of specific items I need to provide a quality experience for the kids of the Bay-Waveland area, Hancock County and the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast. Thank you in advance for any help or consideration.
