After eight years of utilizing healing arts modalities while utilizing painting, I became stable with a diagnosed lung disease called Sarcoidosis. Grateful, I felt a tug on my heart to start an arts organization as a means to give back to the community, especially youth. My sister Carol and I founded Baylight Institute for Creative Arts in 2011, a consortium of volunteers, other arts organizations, and music and art instructors who guide youth through the arts.
With help from the community, we orchestrated a renovation of an old cottage (For us to use as an arts studio) owned by one of the oldest churches in South Phoenix, Arizona. Private music lessons and group art classes began in 2012. We simultaneously found out that the church had a scholarship trust fund available for youth that couldn't afford lessons. This area is one of the lowest income areas in the Phoenix area, and the families really appreciate subsidized lessons as they couldn't afford it otherwise. Most elementary schools in the area don't offer music. That's tragic!
In 2015, Baylight Institute was approved as a Tax Exempt 501-3(C) Charity. Our mission is to help create culture in the community offering music and art programs, creative workshops and community events. We continue to make a difference in children's lives and the community. I have volunteered at Baylight Institute on an average of eight hours a week and intend on continuing as a volunteer. I know first hand the positive effects of music and art, have seen notable results in the students. Youth students learning, remembering, improving techniques, gaining confidence and skills that will help them as they enter into the workforce and engage in the community. I invite you, friends, to make a difference in the lives of these children through the arts.
You are invited to make a donation for every hour that I volunteer. Proceeds will be allocated for operational expenses and for scholarships. For every $80 donated, 3/4 of the donation will go towards scholarships and the remaining amount will go towards operational expenses. We were recently advised that the campus that houses the property is up for sale. If that occurs, we may need to vacate and find another building. If a miracle happens and we surpass our goal to $800,000. then we can purchase the property!
Either way, we will continue, and with your help, our outreach will be that much larger. As a thank you, I am gifting a Mary Godfrey Original Song on mp3 or Mary Godfrey Original Art Digital Image between February 2016 to the end of March, 2016. Every month that achieves a $5,000. goal, I will perform a Complimentary Rock'n Concert for the Phoenix Community.
