BENEFITING: BAYVIEW-HUNTERS POINT COMMUNITY LEGAL
EVENT DATE: Jul 31, 2016
Team Runners for Justice is representing the millions of Californians today who are having their property destroyed, are unable to see their children, are facing homelessness--and can't do anything about it for the simple reason that they are unable to afford legal representation.
About Bayview/Hunters Point Community Legal and The Largest Unmet and Underfunded Social Need in the United States
Access to legal aid is one of the largest unmet and underfunded social needs in the United States today. According to best estimates, there is roughly one lawyer for every 14,000 legal needs of qualifying low-income Americans. As a result, the most vulnerable members of our communities are left to face life-altering events—such as escaping elder abuse and violent households, or losing housing or custody of their children—on their own.
To close this justice gap, Bayview/Hunters Point Community Legal is pioneering the country’s first system of universal access to legal aid in high-need neighborhoods, which means everyone living in BHPCL's service areas can enforce their civil rights with the help of an attorney, regardless of their ability to pay. Residents have access to help in all areas of law and no one with a viable claim has been turned away since BHPCL opened its doors in 2013.
Team Runners for Justice will be raising money for those most in need in the 94124, 94134, and 94107 zip codes who are facing life-altering events in which full scope legal representation is the only answer for accessing and exercising their civil rights.
Bayview/Hunters Point Community Legal is a 501(c)(3) and all money raised will go to the Direct Legal Services program.
