My name is Barbara Bardak. I am a Stage IV Breast Cancer survivor. Thanks to all the support from my family and friends over the past 4+ years and receiving some of the best medical care I am proud and very grateful to be able to run in the 2011 NYC Marathon!!!
I have always loved to run and have found that daily exercise has been a huge help to me in my battle with breast cancer. I am dedicating this race to all those battling cancer and all the people who have lost their courageous fights with this horrible disease. I am looking to raise money and awareness for Breast cancer research. All the proceeds of my race will go to a grass roots organizartion, "Boobie Trapped for a cure" created in the name of Lisa Sirico who lost her battle with breast cancer two years ago. This organization raises money for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for Breast cancer research.
The type of breast cancer I have is driven by hormones and is very aggressive due to HER2+. The bottom line is that about 10+ years ago if a woman was HER2+ she wouldn't have a chance. I am fortunate to be here because of Research which discovered a drug called Herceptin. This drug has saved thousands of womens lives since being discovered. It only became available about a year and a half before I was diagnosed in 2006. I receive this treatment every three weeks. I wouldn't be here today with out it!! Without research there will never be a cure!!!!
The foundation "Boobie trapped for a cure" was founded by Lisa Sirico, who wanted all the money to go toward breast cancer research for everyone's daughters who hopefully will not have to fight the battle she fought. The type of Breast cancer Lisa battled is known as Triple Negative. This type is very aggressive and hard to figure out. This is why her devoted family and friends founded "Boobie Trapped for a cure". Lisa had the biggest and brightest smile...it could light up a room! She was a wonderful mother of three children, a wife, sister, daughter and to so many who were lucky enough to call her "friend". She inspired me so much!!! She fought so hard and even on her toughest days always managed a smile! Every time I'm running and get tired and want to stop I just think of Lisa's struggle and her brright smile and I always continue on. Lisa's bright spirit will live on forever through her family and friends... This one is for you LISA!!!
Memorial SLoan Kettering Cancer center has amazing research centers and is leading the way in this field. Every minute of everyday someone is working on trying to figure out a cure for cancer and they are discovering new drugs all the time. Without vital research there will never be a cure! Please help me make a difference in someone's life by making a contribution. Thank you!
