BBBS Christie Stallings Memorial Scholarship

Organized by: Mark Stallings

THE STORY:

My wife Christie died suddenly and tragically at age 28 on January 26, 2015.  In order to keep her memory alive and serve a cause near and dear to both our hearts, I am establishing the Big Brothers Big Sisters Christie Stallings Memorial Scholarship.

Christie and I began volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Detroit thinking this was a way for us to give to the community but we received so much more than we gave.  The program and our “Littles” taught us and enriched our lives. We learned about ourselves and the importance of giving back to our community through this program.

As a tangible way to see Christie live on, I wish to help send Christie’s “Little” to college.  Christie’s "Little" is truly inspirational for her age. She volunteers for the homeless on the weekends and has even organized an event to collect and distribute coats to the needy. She has straight A's and is an excellent student, much like Christie. She hopes to someday go to Harvard and start a business to help those less fortunate. Her life is not without hardship. She has seen death and poverty but maintains a positive attitude that is truly contagious and inspirational. She is becoming a wonderful young woman who has so much to offer this world.

I hope this scholarship grows over time to help many deserving “Littles” and inspires others to become active in the BBBS Program.
