BENEFITING: Nourish International
ORGANIZER: Nourish International
Chapters: Boston College and Boston University
Partner Organization: Center for Multidisciplinary Training and Advising (CECAM)
This year, the Boston College and Boston University Chapters are partnering with the Center for Multidisciplinary Training and Advising (CECAM) in Cochabamba, Bolivia to develop ecological technologies and health workshops to improve health and quality of life for community members within the lowest socio-economic groups. The Chapters will also collaborate with Sustainable Bolivia, another local organization in Bolivia to facilitate the project with CECAM.
The Problem: Many communities in Cochabamba lack both financial and environmental resources, such as running water that would ensure proper health and sanitation practices.
The Solution: We can help by aiding in the development of ecological technologies that utilize local resources to sustainably improve health and sanitation. Solar ovens provide an inexpensive and environmentally sustainable method of cooking, and dry toilets provide proper sanitation in communities without running water. Additionally, providing health workshops for school children is integral in communicating the importance of proper healthcare and hygiene at a young age.
The Impact: The development of sustainable technologies and health education programs will provide a holistic understanding of and the means necessary to ensure proper health and sanitation practices in the communities for years to come.
CECAM is a Bolivian non-profit organization established in 1997 that works to promote human rights through ecological and social projects within the lowest socio-economic groups. Working in partnership with communities, they develop ecological technologies, encourage renewable energy, and implement educational programs and trainings to support sustainable development.
