Child sexual abuse. Not something that is fun to talk about, and not something I would have been reaching out to friends and family about a few years ago.
But in the last year, after joining the board of The Baltimore Child Abuse Center (BCAC) , I have been exposed to the enormous problem of sexual abuse our community’s children are facing, but more importantly, have seen what a difference an organization can make to fight this epidemic.
And even though it is unpleasant, it is something we cannot ignore:
- 1 in 4 girls will be sexually abused before they turn 18
- 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18
- 75 million children will be born in the US over the next 18 years and 15 million of them will be sexually abused
- only 10% of sexual abuse ever gets reported
Through my work with the BCAC board I have seen how sexual abuse knows no bounds and crosses all socio-economic & cultural borders. I have learned that people very close to me are survivors, in some cases without ever talking about it to those closest to them, or worse, without ever being heard. And I have learned that the biggest thing that needs to happen for this epidemic to end is something we can all do. We need to talk about it.
We need to remove the stigma attached to child sexual abuse, and while unpleasant and emotional and scary, we need to encourage people to speak up. For themselves, for loved ones, for friends, for any and every child. The only way to break the cycle of abuse is to remove it from the shadows.
So that is why I’m running. I want to raise awareness (and yes raise some money as well) for this very noble cause. Please help me any way you can.
