BENEFITING: BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF ALABAMA
When I was a senior in high school my mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. It was a trying time in my life as I was deciding on whether to stay in state for college or leave my mom as she started her treatment and attend The University of Alabama. My mom finished her last round of radiation as she moved me into my dorm for me to start freshman year – she was a warrior. Fast forward, my mom was finished with treatment and was declared cancer free – words every family wants to hear when a loved one has fought so hard. As a freshman at The University of Alabama I pledged Zeta Tau Alpha whose philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. I dedicated the next four years of my life to countless Octobers spent in pink clothing and fundraising through different events with our most popular event being our Think Pink Gymnastics Meet and our BBQ for Breast Cancer. After I graduated from college I started my career in event and wedding planning and drifted away from my philanthropic roots, which brings me to this year. In February, after 7 years of being in remission my mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. A feeling of helplessness washed over me. I knew that after a little hiatus from fundraising since college this year would be different – this year I would make a difference. After working with multiple bride’s this year whose mother’s are fighting the same fight as my mom and having a couple of sweet mother’s of the bride lose their battle to breast cancer I along with my boss chose to design a t-shirt and sell them with all of our proceeds going to the BCRFA – all in all we raised about $1,000.00 which I was tickled about. I knew that BCRFA was the organization I wanted to donate to after having been educated about BCRF through Delta. Two years ago Delta opened their Breast Cancer One flight up to customers for the first time and not just employees. My mom was one of the survivors chosen for the trip to New York City and she decided to bring me with her. During this trip I was able to meet researchers whose research is funded by BCRF – I was able to meet survivors and fighters and I was able to learn more about this terrible disease that affects entirely too many people. These along with many other events is why my heart is in breast cancer research. I hope you will join me on this journey as a begin my first year as a member of the Junior Board for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama!
