THE STORY:

My mother-in-law, Mary, is kind of a rock star.  She was diagnosed last December with Stage IV breast cancer, and she firmly declared that she was planning to beat it.  During her 18 weeks of chemo treatments, she “barged ahead’ as she so often said. She even made chemo treatments look fun, turning them into artist studio sessions with her friends, producing piece after piece, with laughter and chatter throughout. Her determination never wavered, frequently attending spin class the day after her grueling treatments. Her spin instructor even used her as an example to motivate other spinners, many of whom were half her age. And, her positive attitude and determination paid off when her first PET scan showed that almost all of the cancer that had developed in her breast, lymph nodes, liver, and spine had disappeared. This was truly one of the happiest days of our lives, and a testament to her strength and positive outlook.

Beyond, Mary is a rock star in other, even more important, ways.  She is a constant champion of her husband, her three sons and daughters-in-law and seven grandkids. Back when I was in college and law school she even let me camp out at her dining room table while I studied for college finals and the bar exam. She’s a talented artist, baker, sewer, knitter, gardener, biker…. (the list goes on). She loves her MN Gophers, Twins, and Vikings as much as any true-blue Minnesotan. She taught me how to sew (we made my dress for a class reunion), tried to teach me how to knit (I never finished my first scarf), bakes with me (even giving me her mean chocolate zucchini cake recipe) , gives me mountains of home-grown zucchini (so I can make her recipe).  She loves being with her grandkids, and takes my daughters to ballet and knits them sweaters with tags that say Made With Love by Grandma Mary. She is deeply loved, and endearingly called YaYa (YaYa is Greek for grandma).

So this year I’m running the TCS New York City Marathon for her.  I will be training like crazy for my run, but more importantly, I’m going to help raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), whose mission is to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research.

When Mary was diagnosed, I had no idea how many variables exist in breast cancers, and how specific characteristics of the person and the cancer guide treatment.  It’s incredible how research and medical advances have improved treatment.  I want to support those advances, and I want science to find a cure so Mary and others never have to face down this crappy illness ever again.

I am asking for your support to help me reach my fundraising goals in support of BCRF’s work.  Any amount you can give is so appreciated, and 91% goes to research and awareness programs.

Just click the big donate button.  It'll take about ten seconds. . . .

The marathon will take me a *little* longer, but I’m thrilled to be doing it in celebration an honor of Mary’s wonderful treatment results.  And with hope and support for a cure!
