BENEFITING: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
I could not be more excited to be a part of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s (BCRF) team for the 2017 New York City Marathon. This combines two of my passions – running and supporting an organization that is committed to breast cancer awareness, prevention and finding a cure! As so many people have, me and my family have been personally impacted by this disease far too many times.
My personal breast cancer story begins in 2007 when my mother was diagnosed with the disease at age 49. After surgery, chemo therapy, radiation and hormone therapy she persevered and joined the club with so many others as a breast cancer survivor. Nearly 5 years to the day later, I went in for what was supposed to be a base line mammogram given my family history and was shockingly diagnosed with early stage breast cancer at the age of 30. After several surgeries and 5 years of hormonal therapy, I will officially be done with treatment in August 2017. With 2017 marking our 10 and 5 year survivorship respectively, my mother and I were starting discussions on what we were going to do to celebrate in honor of this milestone. But unfortunately, things did not go as planned. In February of this year my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. So instead of going on a celebratory vacation will be spending 2017 going through yet another battle with cancer.
I know my family is not alone. There are so many others out there who have been impacted personally by this disease. I cannot think of a more appropriate way for me to cap of this year than being a part of this team and supporting the critically important research and work being done through the BCRF. I will be running on November 5th in celebration of the fact that I will have officially completed my breast cancer treatment. More importantly, I will be running in honor of so many others who are fighting the fight and for those who courageously lost the battle. In addition to raising money to support this important cause, I hope I can provide inspiration for all for all of those currently battling the disease. Given the work that the BCRF and so many others have done over the last several years it is possible to battle through. Since I was diagnosed I moved half way across the country, met and married my soul mate, and am healthy enough to train and run a marathon!
My biggest inspiration as I train and on race day will be the strongest, most amazing survivor I know, my mom. I would literally not be where I am today if it were not for her, and that’s not even counting the fact that she gave birth to me! What I will endure in running the 26.2 miles pales in comparison to what she is now enduring and I will be thinking of her every step of the way.
I thank you in advance for your support of this critically important cause. If you are not familiar with the BCRF I encourage you to check out their website to learn more - https://www.bcrfcure.org/. BCRF is recognized as one of the most financially efficient nonprofits in the country. It is the only breast cancer organization with an A+ rating from CharityWatch and has also earned a 4-start rating from Charity Navigator (the highest rating awarded!). 91% of every dollar spent by BCRF is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness programs. Please consider donating, not only to support me in my endeavor to run my first marathon but also to support this cause so that one day this disease will not be so prevalent in all of our lives! Below I’ve included some additional information on the BCRF marathon team and how you can make a donation.
Message from the BCRF:
Our BCRF marathon team is diverse—we are breast cancer patients, survivors, family members, employees, supporters, allies, professionals, runners, non-runners, and even researchers. But what we have in common is one thing: the desire and dedication to do our part to help bring about a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. For over 20 years, BCRF-funded researchers have been at the forefront of nearly every significant breakthrough in understanding, preventing and treating the disease. We know that the answers continue to lie in science, and that the only thing standing in the way is research funding. With your help, together we can accelerate progress and achieve a world without breast cancer.
