A little about Boys and Girls Clubs of America:
Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with three women in Hartford, Conn.: Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. A cause was born.
Boys and Gilrs club aims “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens." Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Following are the types of programs offered by Boys and Girls clubs:
- Education and career programs
- Character and leadership programs
- Health and Life skills
- The arts programs Sports, fitness and recreation
As of 2015, Boys & Girls Clubs of America served nearly 4 million children and youth through club membership and community outreach. There are more than 4,200 chartered Club facilities. Clubs can be found in all fifty states as well as locations in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and US military bases. In total, Boys & Girls Clubs of America employ about 50,000 staff members.
