It's the first of June, and that can only mean one thing...my birthday is in four days. Now before you start rethinking our relationship based on my apparent narcissism and neediness, let me explain why June 5th matters. Hint: it DOES involve a gift. But not for me.
As many of you know, a series of divinely inspired events a couple years ago sent me off on a journey to serve the people of Haiti. A few days into my first visit, I met two boys who would quickly make an indelible mark on my heart. Meet Niason and his brother, Jim.
I'd be willing to wager you won't meet two more charismatic, compassionate, contented kids than these two anywhere this side of the Atlantic. They'll likely become the next great leaders in this beautiful country, but what matters most to me is that they're well-loved. And that's where birthdays and gifts come in.
About a year ago, Niason, age eight, accidentally set fire to the family home after cooking dinner one night. They lost everything. The family of 10(!) now lives in a tiny cardboard and tin shack forty-five minutes out of town. I visited the place for the first time yesterday, and suffice it to say that at this point, compiling a birthday wish list doesn't even make sense anymore.
For me, at least.
From now until June 5th, I'm asking all of you to consider helping me make my only birthday wish come true: a new home for Niason and Jim. I'll be posting LOTS of information and updates on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/johnblack), at my blog (www.twograinsofsalt.com) and on Twitter (@johnblack) in the coming days. Even if you're not able to join my birthday celebration financially, I'd be positively elated if you'd tell your friends and family about this. I know you've heard it before, but every little bit counts!
Thanks SO very much for your friendship and support. In many ways, you're responsible for where I am today, sitting in the hot Haitian sun seeking a way to serve some people I love. I'm glad we get to do life together. Hope you have a fabulous Friday!
