During the last summer, a conversation was had between myself and my good friend Capt. Mark Lichak. As a member of the military he was commenting on how jealous he was of my 7 day stubble as he was required to shave daily. I greatly appreciate the sacrifices, minor like shaving and major like putting their life on the line, that Mark and the rest of his fellow troops undergo on a daily basis while I sit at a desk.
Starting on Tuesday, November 6th his unit, the 101st Airborne Division, 1st Brigade Combat Team (specifically the Bastogne Brigade Comat Team) (Facebook link), will be deploying to Afganistan for a scheduled 9 month tour of duty.
To show my support for the troops and to bring attention to all that while the politicians say the war is ending, there are still troops in harms way, I have started this fundraiser.
This is how it will work. I plan to cease shaving on November 6th. This is to the horror of my wife, my kids, my friends and pretty much anyone who will see me on the street. The past times I have attempted to grow a beard I have heard the following quotes:
"Please make him stop!!"
"Are you Amish?"
"Is that dirt?"
I vow that as soon as the target dollar amount is reached, or the unit returns to the US, whichever occurs first, I will resume shaving.
But there's more!! As an added bonus, for every person who joins me, I will increase the target donation amount by $50. Ladies, I'm not leaving you out. If you would like to stop shaving something, join in. But I do ask that all participants (male and female) to provide a before photo and regular photos through out the fundraiser of the progress. Let's earn the money and raise the awareness and have fun with it.
