Running a marathon is hard. Battling brain cancer is even harder.
In October of 2012 while Monika and Tara were training for the Marine Corps Marathon, Monika received the shocking news that she had a brain tumor. Due to the location of the tumor it was considered inoperable, and therefore incurable. Monika's training came to an abrupt stop and her training was quickly replaced with brain surgery (for a biopsy and shunt placement), six weeks of daily radiation and oral chemotherapy, and endless doctors appointments. Monika wasn't able to run the Marine Corps Marathon, but Tara still ran with a few of their friends who all took turns carrying a photo cutout of Monika on a stick. Go Team Mokie!
Throughout the six weeks of radiation Monika slowly started running again, and at the beginning of 2013 Tara and Monika started training together to run the LA Marathon. Due to the higher dose of chemo that Monika was on their runs were much slower and filled with walk breaks, but they kept training until March 17 when they crossed the finish line of the LA Marathon side-by-side, holding hands. Tara's 12th marathon, Monika's 19th, and Monika's 1st in between rounds of chemo.
The dynamic duo are now training for another marathon, and this time would like to really make their miles count. As they train for the Long Beach Marathon on October 13th they will be fundraising for the Kesari Neuro-oncology Lab at UCSD where Monika is being treated. http://kesarilab.ucsd.edu/
To help support their fundraising efforts they are also dedicating the "Glam Shades of Gray" line of their Glam Runner tutus to this cause. 100% of proceeds of the sale of the gray tutus will go towards Dr. Kesari's lab. http://glam-runner.com/ordering-information/tutu-colors-and-styles/
Thank you for contributing to our fundraising efforts. With your help we can make strides towards beating brain cancer one mile at a time!
