"It's a disaster: children bear brunt of southern Africa's devastating drought" - the Guardian 04/21
Zimbabwe, the traditional bread basket of the region, suffered the worst drought and food crisis in 35 years as a result of El Nino. Access to water is severely affected. In Zimbabwe where many families rely on subsistence farming, the near-total crop failure has left people on the brink of a famine.
A team from Canada is leaving this summer to serve in and learn about Zimbabwe's poorest communities and to be an encouragement to local careworkers who are caring for the poorest of the poor in this dire situation.
Children, who often have to walk more than 8 KM to school every day, now do so with empty stomachs. It is becoming common that children faint in class because of hunger.
We will be walking 8 KM in this walkathon to remember these vulnerable children.
Please make cheques payable to The Peoples Church, and write "Zimbabwe team" on the memo line. Tax receipts will be issued for pledges of $20 or more.
