EVENT DATE: May 01, 2015
Each and every day women are being oppressed by society's standards to look, behave and feel a certain way. Society, and especially parts of the Internet, love to think of girls as vapid and superficial, but they never realise that it's a product of society, and not some inherent flaw on our part.
As a result of this,
- Over 80% of 10-year-old girls are afraid of being fat.
- By middle school, 40-70% of girls are dissatisfied with two or more parts of their body, and body satisfaction hits rock bottom between the ages of 12 and 15.
- 63% of girls think the body image represented by the fashion industry is unrealistic and 47% think it is unhealthy, yet 60% say that they compare their bodies to fashion models, 48% wish they were as skinny as the models in fashion magazines, and 31% of girls admit to starving themselves or refusing to eat as a strategy to lose weight.
After all of this negative self-imagery presented in our society, it is clearly evident that this project is crucial in order to raise awareness about this issue.
Beautiful You Day intends to rebuild self-confidence in young women, starting at Orofino High School. On this day, flowers will be distributed with complimenting messages to boost their confidence and let them know they are beautiful in their own way and are most importantly, worthy.
"A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that's like women too. I want to encourage women to embrace their own uniqueness."
- Miranda Kerr.
