BENEFITING: WOMENS WELL BEING AND DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves." - John Muir
In 2015, I will hike the "green tunnel" of the Appalachian Trail. My feet will cross 2,180 miles as I wander through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. Scientific research has proven that time with nature is beneficial to one's mental health. I'm fortunate to have this opportunity, but there are many out there who are not so lucky.
In Ashville, NC, there are children living in public housing who would never leave the confines of the city, if not for one important program. The Trailblazers Outdoor Adventure Club, operated by the Women's Wellbeing and Development Foundation (WWD-F), takes approximately 24 kids a year on day hikes in the mountains of western NC. Over the course of the summer, these kids learn to swim, hike approximately 60 miles, and get to experience a day on a farm (milking goats, collecting honey, and picking berries). At the end of the session, the top hikers go on an overnight backpacking trip, and everyone celebrates their accomplishment at a pool party.
Children who participate in the program often see improvements in their behavior, social interactions, and overall health by the end of the summer. This awesome opportunity costs WWD-F $3,000 annually. The program is free to participants and the costs incurred by WWD-F include transportation to and from trailheads, healthy snacks/lunches, first-aid supplies (if needed), and additional miscillaneous hiking supplies.
I have the amazing opportunity to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. I want to help WWD-F fund a year of their Trailblazers Outdoor Adventure Club so that others can have the amazing opportunity to take to the mountains. Please help me by donating $5, $25, $32.86, whatever amount you can. Together, we can give these kids an experience they would never have in the city.
Thanks in advance!
