We are raising money to fund groundbreaking research to study S. aureus (or "staph) in southern Africa. Three volunteer researchers will be collecting bacterial samples from children and adults in Gaborone, Botswana. This bacteria is a major cause of severe illness, especially in children and in HIV-positive individuals. Our research goal is to estimate the prevalence of this bacteria among people in Gaborone, learn what antibiotics are effective against the specific strains in that part of the world (for example, if methicillin resistance (MRSA) is as huge a problem there as in the developed world), and identify characteristics that put people at high risk of suffering life-threatening staph infections. Read the full RESEARCH PROPOSAL here. Check out this really great piece, which aired on NPR about the hospital/clinic in which we will work. And one last clip - see Michelle Obama making a personal visit to the pediatric HIV clinic and stressing the importance of the work and progress there.
This research comprises the doctoral dissertation of Rebecca Bryson, who is earning her PhD in Epidemiology. Her special area of interest is international fieldwork. This project is not grant funded, but the findings of the research will be used to propose further work in this area in this part of the world (and hopefully earn funding for the future work!). The project is being funded personally by Rebecca - thus the need for generous donors! Researchers from the Botswana-UPenn Partnership, the University of Botswana, and the University of Texas School of Public Health have each donated laboratory supplies and equipment, as well as clinic and laboratory space. A local nurse has also been donated to help with translations and patient interactions there. What your money will help fund: a $2 thank-you to patients in Gaborone who take part in our research (that's about enough to cover their transportation costs to our clinic visit!) and offsetting the travel and lodging expenses for 3 hard-working and experienced public health graduate student researchers who are even more than willing to cram into a tiny shared space (more expensive than you probably think!)!
For a donation of at least $10, you can receive an awesome t-shirt with the "Becky does Botswana" logo!
Please give more if you can using the "Donate" button to add $ to your shopping account.
We love you and thank you for supporting our dream!
