Since the birth of my beautiful baby boy, I have dealt with postpartum anxiety and depression. PPD for me was not what I thought it would be. I experienced anxiety, intrusive (scary!) thoughts and even had occasions where I woud "see" things in my peripheral vision along with a few occasions of "hearing" things as well. All of these things were going on, and I felt so ashamed that I did not want to talk about it especially since my symptoms got worse after my 6 weeks postpartum check up. I was fortunate that I was seeing my midwife for a well woman exam, and she sat and talked with me for a long time and realized that I was dealing with PPMD. If it weren't for others noticing and caring enough to help me realize, I may have never have sought help. I found many resources from Postpartum Progress, and I truly believe they are an amazing organization bringing women together for support and also educating the public about the signs and symptoms of PPMD. The last thing a mom of a new baby wants to deal with is PPMD, but it happens much more than reported. Since telling my story, I have had multiple people share with me about their PPMD experiences that were very similar to mine, and a couple of the (fantastic!) ladies shared that they never told anyone about it at all!! That is why it is SO important for caring family members, spouses and health professionals to be educated on the broad spectrum of symptoms associated with PPMD. Postpartum progress is working hard to do just this.
Finally, I am planning a hike at Turkey Mountain in Tulsa 6/18/16 at 8am to raise awareness about PPMD and to celebrate PPMD survival and those still on the road there. I would be so honored for others to join!
