The short-term initiatives of “Be Haiti—a Movement for Human Development” will raise approximately $75,000. These monies will be used to build and supply a hospital in Les Cayes, Haiti. The anticipated deadline for completion of the hospital is May 2011.
Long-term goals will contribute to the end of extreme poverty by developing a replicable model for sustainable health, education, agriculture, water, communication, and transportation infrastructures. Further fundraising will be required for the construction of an orphanage, second hospital, primary school, secondary school, and agricultural businesses in Torbeck, Haiti.
The Les Cayes facility will specialize in the care of women and children, but will offer outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services to all Haitians in the Les Cayes area. Be Haiti will renovate and build-on to an existing structure adjacent to a primary and secondary school. The structure will include latrines, running water, and electricity, and will offer a triage foyer, 3 outpatient rooms, 3 obstetric care rooms, 3 pediatric care rooms, 1 critical care and trauma unit, a dental care unit, a pharmacy, and a surgical operating theater. Hospital grounds will offer a well and clean drinking water for public use. The Children of Israel Orphanage, Be Haiti’s Haitian partner organization, owns all hospital property.
Patients requiring more advanced diagnoses or treatments will be referred to Haitian facilities in nearby communities and Port-au-Prince. The Haiti Ministry of Public Health has recognized Be Haiti initiatives and offers referral system support. Be Haiti will purchase an ambulance for the Les Cayes facility that will provide transportation for many patients traveling to referral facilities and for emergencies in nearby communities.
Be Haiti—a Movement for Human Development will raise funds to build and supply a hospital in Les Cayes, Haiti. Partnerships with domestic and Haitian organizations increase likelihood for sustainable, positive impact on populations in need. Be Haiti hopes to improve health and opportunities for development while respecting the culture, norms, and traditions already practiced by the people of Haiti.
