BENEFITING: SAINT PAUL CITY BALLET
EVENT DATE: Mar 30, 2014
Saint Paul City Ballet's contemporary show, Bella Luna, opens in April. The program includes two world premieres as well as one full-length story ballet by Peter Davison, Co-Artistic Director of Boulder Ballet. With new repertoire comes new costumes! We are fundraising through crowd rise to help bring the show to life through costumes and new characters!
The story of Bella Luna deals with general themes of love, friendship, and the joys and trials of everyday life. It also explores the complicated structure of classes throughout society and how those classes interact with one another.
The story of Bella Luna begins with a middle-class young girl named Izzy. Izzy lives with her very protective father, Panto, and spends most of her time day-dreaming about the world beyond her house.
On the other side of the village, a poor boy Arlo lives with his friends the Alley Cats. Arlo is fiercely loyal to those closest to him and wants to include everyone in their fun; even Ina, the shy, little fritte vendor. Ina aspires to be more than she is, but believes there is no way out of this life she is leading.
Soon, Izzy and Panto appear in town looking to purchase some frittes. The Alley Cats pick on them, while Arlo tells them to stop. As soon as their eyes meet, Izzy and Arlo fall in love with one another.
Arlo sneeks Izzy out of her house one night and takes her on his bike to the local café. There they meet Raga, the barista and several other fun locals. Izzy's father is suddenly aware of her absence and comes to the café to take her home.
Panto insisted that Arlo is not for Izzy, he wishes her to marry a rich suitor named Scarache instead. Scarache is not a very nice fellow, but he has enough money to support both Izzy and Panto. Scarache notices that Izzy's love for Arlo is too strong, so he arranges to have Arlo drafted and sent off to war with the Capitano. The Capitno and his army of Soldiers soon recruite Alro.
With Alro gone, Panto promises Izzy's hand to Scarache. Izzy and Scarache are married in a hurry.
As the weeks pass, Izzy tries to find love and happiness in her marriage, but Scarache seems uninterested. Sick from lonliness, Izzy sends her soul to the moon. Ina notices the new full moon and is drawn towards it. In her journey, she finds Arlo, back home from war. They sit together watching the moon, bright and dancing.
Our full-cast dress rehearsals start on March 30th. Performances are April 10th-13th at the James Sewell Tek Box.
