The Alliance is the oldest Great Lakes organization devoted 100 percent to the lakes. Our professional staff works with scientists, policymakers, businesses, community groups and everyday citizens to protect and restore the world’s largest surface freshwater resource.
From forging forward-looking Great Lakes policies to promoting Great Lakes education to on-the-ground efforts to improve thousands of miles of Great Lakes shoreline, we’ve been out front and behind the scenes caring for the lakes since 1970.
Detroit to Luna Pier is the lead-off segment of the Paddle Relay. The Detroit River might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about kayaking but think again! This challenging but spectacular section starts on Belle Isle and heads south through Detroit, passing right in front of the towering Renaissance Center. Wave to the spectators along the Riverwalk as you continue downriver under the Ambassador Bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada. We’ll follow the U.S. side of the river, passing by impressive industrial waterfronts as well as calm channels sheltered by serene wooded and residential islands. The Detroit River flows into the western end of Lake Erie where we’ll head south along the shoreline past nature preserves, elegant homes and finally to Luna Pier near the southern border of Michigan. On Friday and Saturday we’ll join the South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous on the Ohio coast of Lake Erie before hauling our flagship V7 to Michigan City, Indiana to start the second segment of the relay.
