THE STORY:

Hello! We are Jane Lamb, Holley Steele, Betsy Walraven, Kate Stribling and Amy Fisher. We all work at The Bell Center in Homewood, Alabama and we have decided to run in the Mercedes Marathon as a relay team in honor of George Merchant.

George Merchant is a two year old boy who lives in central Alabama. He has a little sister named Arra and he loves to play with balls. George also has Down Syndrome. He has been attending The Bell Center since he was just a little guy. As you can tell from the second picture, George was a little suspicious of all of us, but once he saw the cool toys and books that we have he decided that we were pretty fun!

George has made so much progress over the past two years. He loves to run and dance and he can say and sign so many words! He likes to read books and circle time is one of his favorite parts of our day.

George's mom and dad want you to know that "George is a healthy, handsome, funny and clever two year old who also happens to have Down Syndrome. George is all boy and like most boys loves trucks, tractors, balls, hats and being outside.  He and his 11 month old sister, Arra, are full of energy and keep our household very busy. George affectionately calls his sister "Rah-Rah" and it is now her nickname. As we predicted when he was born, George is teaching our entire family a few life lessons.  Those lessons come wrapped up in all of the joy and humor our little man has brought into our lives.

At 16 weeks of age, George started attending the Bell Center. The services and support provided by the Bell Center has made a huge difference for our family and more importantly for George. Maximizing George's potential in all areas of development has always been our goal. The Bell Center staff has helped us establish a firm foundation to build upon. It is no wonder that families drive from all over the state to benefit from the Bell Center's programs.  Along with the remarkable services we receive from The Bell Center staff, we have found a real sense of community with other parents.  We have established friendships that will last a lifetime."

Please considering donating to The Bell Center and help us reach our fundraising goal- every donation is appreciated and no donation is too small (or too big!!).We love working at The Bell Center and watching children like George grow and learn every day! The Bell Center is a one of a kind place. Please help us continue to serve and help children like George and his friends maximize their potential!!

Thanks,

George's Gang

The Bell Center offers early intervention services to children at risk for delay, often within a few days or weeks after birth. Parents often feel a sense of helplessness when they discover their child has special needs; however, the Bell Center staff and volunteers are able to provide them with specific information and encouragement allowing parents to move from a sense of confusion, to a deep pride in their children’s accomplishments and optimism for the future.

Programs at The Bell Center are designed to promote growth in gross and fine motor skills, as well as language, cognition, self-help, and play skills. Each child is evaluated annually, and goals are tailored specifically to the child’s needs. The Bell Center employs a staff of highly qualified professionals including physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, and early childhood special education teachers who work directly with infants and toddlers in many programs while directing the efforts of volunteers who work with toddlers in other programs.
