BENEFITING: Boys Hope Girls Hope
EVENT DATE: Oct 30, 2011
We would like to thank all of you who generously supported Boys Hope Girls Hope and our "Grand Canyon Run -- for the Kids". All together, we raised nearly $5,000, which will help BHGH to continue to provide academic and residential scholarship programs for at-risk, yet academically capable and motivated children. We, as well as BHGH, are truly grateful for the generosity that so many of you demonstrated, without which Boys Hope Girls Hope could not exist. Thank you so very much!
The 23.5 mile Rim-to-Rim run itself was an incredible success and we are already planning a potential repeat next year. The captivating beauty of the Canyon, and the joy of running on well defined trails through such intensely mesmerizing natural scenery is already drawing us back! We encourage anyone who enjoys running to join us -- we really can't think of a more beautiful run anywhere.
We started at 7am and finished nine hours later, with one hour for lunch at Phantom Ranch at the bottom and plenty of photo stops along the way. The 14.5 miles and 6,000 vertical feet downhill from the North Rim were the highlight, as the north side of the Grand Canyon receives far fewer visitors, and offered the most spectacular scenery. We passed no more than a dozen others on the entire way down - the most surprising were two other runners who passed us in the opposite direction. Both were in full costumes for Halloween and had started at 4am from the South Rim in their quest to run round-trip, Rim to Rim to Rim. Hats off to these true hard core runners -- appropriately, one was dressed as Superman!
While we were humbled by Superman, we felt extremely fortunate to partake in such an amazing experience and honored to raise money for an incredible cause. Thank you all again for your support and encouragement. We hope we may do this again in the future, with as many of you who may like to join. Thank you!
Although many of us have been runners for years, on October 30, 2011, we will run across the Grand Canyon (Rim-to-Rim, 23 miles, and nearly 6,000 feet uphill) in support of Boys Hope Girls Hope (www.bhghsocal.org), an amazing charity that has helped many at-risk, yet academically motivated and capable children to realize their potential and enter college.
Boys Hope Girls Hope is an academic and residential scholarship program that helps at-risk, yet academically capable and motivated children to realize their full potential by providing value centered, family-like homes, opportunities, parenting, and education. Father Paul Sheridan, SJ, an educator in St. Louis, founded the program in 1977, and today there are 34 Boys Hope Girls Hope homes in 14 US cities and 4 foreign countries.
The opportunities provided would otherwise be impossible for many of these children, and the success rate is high. Since 1991, 100% of Boys Hope Girls Hope's U.S. alumni have gone on to college (click to see colleges attended). And Boys Hope Girls Hope's college retention rate is 89%-94% annually, compared to the national average of 66%.
The statistics facing American cities are grim.
- Costs to the economy associated with high school dropouts reach $260 billion each year.
- 20% of American children age six or younger live below the poverty line. Children born into poverty are six times likelier to drop out of school.
- More than 12 million students are projected to drop out of school over the next decade, at an estimated national cost of over $3 trillion dollars.
We greatly appreciate any support that you choose to provide. Fundraising is a constant challenge, especially in the current economic climate, and your support will directly assist the 16 children at the two Boys Hope Girls Hope homes in Southern California. Boys Hope Girls Hope is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and donations are 100% tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Running the Grand Canyon is considered one of the world's premier trail runs. We will camp the first night on the North Rim and start running at 4am the next morning to beat the Arizona heat! We hope to finish in 7 to 8 hours. There are a number of ways you can help:
1) Join our team and help our cause! It is not necessary to run the Canyon to become part of the team! If you prefer to offer other emotional support, join us on the North or South Rim. Feel free to choose what is best for you and then invite all your friends!
2) Make a tax-deductible donation! Any amount, large or small, will help and will be much appreciated -- and can often be matched by your corporation.
On behalf of Robin Sinclair, Executive Director of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Southern California, the staff, and all the individuals who directly benefit from the stable home environment that this program provides, we would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and for your support and encouragement. The organization could not exist without the support of our generous donors. Thank you!
