My name is Ben Gordon and I am a doctoral student in Biology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am working with Emily Zacherle a master’s student in Applied Kinesiology and a colleague of mine on this project. We are working on a research program to lower blood pressure in both older and younger populations with and without hypertension. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for the number one cause of death worldwide: cardiovascular disease. Current adherence to lifestyle modifications and medications is extremely low, due to inconvenience, cost, and unwanted side effects.
Our research will provide a simple isometric (the muscle doesn’t change length) exercise program for individuals with both high and normal blood pressure, which requires less than 15 minutes/day and 3 days/week! It can be done anywhere, and anytime! The purpose of our research is to determine the effects of isometric exercise (using a cheap hand grip device or performing leg lifts) on blood pressure and to determine the sex and age related differences associated with these outcomes. In addition we are investigating if there is a relationship with glucose tolerance with this type of exercise, similar to cardiovascular training.
We are currently raising money to begin funding this project.
Please help us educate, and save lives!
