Help raise $4000 to support Big City Mountaineers in their mission to impact the lives of nearly 1000 under-served youth this summer. BCM operates in 8 metro areas of the US and continuing to expand. The impact they make in my own backyard, Denver, is significant. BCM kids consistently show growth in internal assets, including positive values (integrity, honesty, responsibility), social competencies (decision-making, conflict resolution), and positive identity (self-esteem, purpose, positive view). These characteristics are proven, leading to stronger, healthier kids.
The Grand Teton (13,770 feet) is one of the world’s most beautiful mountains. Over 3 days, I'll travel 14 miles round-trip with 14,000 feet of combined elevation gain and loss, including extensive scrambling and fifth class climbing on the way to the summit.
I've been fortunate to be able to work with BCM over the past 5 years either as a fundraiser or a volunteer. As a volunteer, I've been able to see the benefits first hand. The past 2 years I've worked with the organization on the overnight program and spent the time working with the same youth organization. It was amazing to see the same kids 2 years in a row and have them remember me from the previous year. I was able to participate with 9 year-olds in an activity that seems like a game to them, but when it's finished, they realize how working together or asking for help can really be beneficial to them.
Big City Mountaineers transforms the lives of under-resourced urban youth through wilderness mentoring expeditions that instill critical life skills. We partner with community-based youth organizations and caring adult volunteers who act as mentors in the field to help young people realize their potential. Our curriculum improves integrity, self- esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills in close to 1,000 youth annually.
