BENEFITING: The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp
EVENT: Team HITW NYC Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Hello family, friends and any strangers who might be reading this,
Over the past few years, I have been faced with a physical challenge that I never anticipated. As a comeback victory for myself, I had the goal of completing the 2015 Hartford Marathon. So I did. As I ran and ran...and ran, I remained motivated by my friends, family and those that had provided treatment to me during my recovery. I thought about the down times and how with the help of others, my spirits were lifted and I was able to overcome the obstacles I faced. Crossing the finish line in October 2015, I said to myself "I did it, I really did it". Ok truth be told, halfway through I did my own sanity of willingly running that far.
In came 2016 and a few winter pounds later, I recalled sitting at the Hyatt Hotel bar in NYC in 2014. It was the night before a day of pre-surgery testing at The Hospital for Special Surgery. I was enjoying an amazing Lemon Drop Martini. If you are ever in NYC and near there, you must try it. Ok, back to my story. So here I was enjoying this martini (or maybe 2), and I look over to my right and see a lady enjoying her own beverage, wearing a NYC marathon medal around her neck. She was proud, she was smiling and you could tell she had completed her goal. As I looked down at my wrist, bedazzled in a purple brace, unable to move itself, I remember thinking; that's going to be me. It has to be......eh, but first let me have another martini!
Recently I remembered this martini, I mean, the lady wearing her NYC medal and decided this was going to be me. NYC is special in my life because it was there that my hand and arm gained its life back (shout out to HSS and Dr. Lee). With that came my conclusion that somehow I needed to get a bib for the NYC Marathon.
Upon purusing the marathong website, I saw that The Hole In the Wall Gang Camp was a participating charity and my decision of what team I wanted to support, was easy. I have seen how the illness of a child affects not only the child (the patient), but the entire family. I have been inspired and amazed by the strength and perseverance of friends in my life who stop at nothing to put a smile on their child's face. I have been honored to care for a medically complex child and understand the undivided love and attention that every second of every day entails. I have heard stories from friends who have pariticipated in the Camps family weekend and what a magical time it was, for all. But mostly, I have seen the strength and resilience of these kids. Kids don't stop wanting to play, wanting to smile and laugh because of a barrier placed in front of them. They continue on, strong and determined to get to the finish line.
Please consider donating to this fundraiser, as I will be completing the 2016 NYC Marathon on behalf of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, but the real winners are the children and families this charity supports.
If you have read this far, no - I do not know why my pictures are all sideways.
