As a team let's support getting as many people as possible registered in the National Marrow Donor Program. My goal... To make it possible for everyone in need to find a match. Thanks to my unrelated donor--and her stem cells!--I'm still here to run Boston!
With your help over the last two years I’ve run three marathons, three half marathons and various 5, 10 and 15Ks. Last year, much to my astonishment, I finished my second marathon with a qualifying time for Boston. And, while qualification never guarantees an actual place in the race, I received a coveted entry. So... on April 21st I will be running in the 118th Boston Marathon! I'm thrilled,,, And I'm humbled when I think of all your support that helped bring me here.
Previously I have run with Team in Training, raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This time I am running independently. When I began running two years ago I dreamed that if I ever got the opportunity to run Boston I would raise money for the Be The Match Foundation, the nonprofit that supports the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). It was through this registry that my unrelated donor was found. Due to what has proven to be the perfect match, I am running marathons, and living each day with a healthy immune system and healthy blood, all generated from my donor’s healthy stem cells.
Since my transplant, I have been a mentor for others who are awaiting or going through their own bone marrow/stem cell transplants. Lucky recipients as myself find unrelated donor matches, but many more do not. I have lost friends who succumbed to their blood cancers before a good match could be found. Expanding the registry increases the chances for people without a related match to find their life-saving donor.
It costs about $100 (for initial DNA testing) to add one new donor to the registry, which Be the Match funds so that volunteers of all ages and backgrounds can join the registry. And, thankfully, new donors are added to the registry each day. So now it’s time for me to act on my dream. It’s but a small gesture to support Be the Match as I run Boston.
Please join my Boston “team.” Help me raise at least $2500 to put 25 new donors on the registry. But the more the better! Each newly registered donor increases the chances for a hopeful recipient. Let’s band together to make blood cancer survival and transplant success the norm.
I’m so thrilled to be running Boston! Thanks for joining me; together we will make a difference for people and families searching for their perfect match. May they, too, run their own marathons tomorrow!
Boston, here we come!
