Justice for All

Bet Tzedek, The House of Justice, provides free legal assistance to thousands of people who would otherwise be denied access to the legal system underpinning our democracy. Founded over 40 years ago, Bet Tzedek acts upon a central tenet of Jewish law and tradition: "Tzedek, tzedek tirdof -- Justice, justice you shall pursue." Bet Tzedek provides free legal assistance regardless of race, religious background, ethnicity, sexual orientation or immigration status to 20,000 people each year. Since its founding, Bet Tzedek has helped more than 420,000 people.

Bet Tzedek’s 59-person staff includes 29 attorneys, many of whom are national experts in their respective practice areas. The organization’s portfolio of projects combines direct legal representation with outreach, education, and legislative advocacy.

To increase the impact of staff and resources, in all of its programs and services Bet Tzedek leverages extensive pro bono support from volunteers.  Law firms, attorneys, paralegals, law student interns and other volunteers work with Bet Tzedek attorneys to conduct clinics and provide legal advice and representation.  In 2015, 1,700 volunteers contributed 59,000 hours valued in excess of $17 million in additional support.

Bet Tzedek’s comprehensive services are offered through 17 separate-but-integrated programs: providing holistic, wrap-around legal services. These include the Family Caregiver Project, which provides senior and caregiver services—including conservatorships, guardianships for children cared for by relatives, and elder abuse intervention—and the Employment Rights Project, which helps low-wage workers and trafficked laborers avoid exploitation, obtain fair wages, and secure safe working conditions.  Bet Tzedek’s other programs address issues surrounding unsafe housing conditions, access to healthcare, tax controversies, foreclosure prevention, and others.  At the national level, Bet Tzedek obtains reparations for Holocaust survivors from the German government through its Holocaust Survivors Justice Network—a program with support from more than 100 law firms, corporations, and Jewish service agencies that is now active in more than 30 cities in North America.

For more than 40 years Bet Tzedek has helped make Los Angeles a more just community for all of its inhabitants.
