Beyond el Campo is a rural education initiative whose mission is to provide quality educational opportunities to students and families of an under-served region of Costa Rica. Beyond el Campo seeks to combat the issue of educational inequality in La Zona de los Santos by providing essential tools and educational resources to inspire success. Our goals are to provide a public space that serves as a community center for learning and creative engagement; to equip that space with resources that connect students with their own passions and interests; and to offer educational programs and workshops open to the entire community.
Beyond el Campo has successfully opened the first public library of La Zona de los Santos, in Santa Cruz de Leon Cortes. With over 1,500 books in its collection, it is the largest public library in the entire region. The library not only provides books and other vital resources but offers educational programming, including book groups, summer reading camps and after-school study support. Working in collaboration with local community members, we strive to make the library sustainable and 100% community-run. The library and educational programs it provides inspire learners of all ages to believe in their abilities and reach their dreams beyond el campo, or beyond the countryside.
Beyond el Campo has also begun a volunteer service/immersion experience in Santa Cruz for American college students. Each summer, a pair of field interns lead a group of student volunteers for a two week to two month stay in the village. Through their community service work, the volunteers will have endless opportunities to integrate themselves into village life. They will be invited to take part in local activities and give back to the community with a volunteer project of their own. They can become involved in the library specifically or spearhead initiatives of their own. Finally, they will have the opportunity to do a homestay, a unique way to take part in family life and integrate into the culture.
