Children and adults are dying from this "INVISIBLE DISEASE" that sometimes goes undiagnosed until it's too late. Awareness to the signs and symptoms is key to saving lives...maybe even your own!
We were not aware of Type 1 Diabetes because all that is ever heard about was Type 2 Diabetes. Well it is time to educate the public on this life-threatening disease as well as end the misconceptions that come along with a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis.
Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas produces little to no insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into energy. Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age but is usually diagnosed from INFANCY to the late thirties. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has NOTHING to do with diet or lifestyle, is not preventable, is not reversible, and has NO CURE. It is the second most common autoimmune disease found amongst children.
Children and adults who have T1D, stay alive by injecting insulin through a syringe, 4 to 6 times a day or by infusing insulin through an insulin pump along with 6 - 10 daily finger pricks. They count carbs for everything they put in their mouth! Yes, EVERYTHING. And guess what, they CAN eat sugar!! In fact, when they have a low blood sugar, below 70, they need sugar to help put them into their target range.
Type 1 Diabetes affects EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE! Food, illness, hormones, exercise, adrenaline, altitude, weather, stress... you name it, it affects blood glucose levels! Managing T1D is challenging to say the least and it takes a lot of work.
Only 5% of the diabetic population has Type 1 Diabetes but it is becoming more prevalent. There is a GLOBAL RISE at a 3% yearly increase and more children are being diagnosed. Many times these children are being misdiagnosed with the flu virus. This is because, the onset of Type 1 Diabetes has flu-like symptoms including:
- Extreme thirst
- Frequent urination
- Weight loss
- Increased appetite
- Blurred vision/vision changes
- Fruity scented breath
- Heavy/labored breathing
- Mood changes
Children and adults are dying from this "INVISIBLE DISEASE" due to being undiagnosed/misdiagnosed with the flu or some sort of virus. Awareness to the signs and symptoms are key. A one day's delay of a T1D diagnosis can result in life-altering complications and even death due to Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Please join us in helping Beyond Type 1 in raising awareness and bringing education on this life-threatening disease.
