BENEFITING: Beyond Type 1
ORGANIZER: Beyond Type 1
Jamie Perry is a 22-year-old recent college graduate living beyond Type 1 Diabetes. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on November 13, 1995, at only 14 months of age. I have been an advocate for Type 1 Diabetes awareness, funding, and research as long as I have known how to talk. From ages 2 through 17, I raised nearly $100,000 for JDRF. I have served as a youth ambassador for the Special Diabetes Program and a delegate for JDRF Children's Congress. As much as I've tried to never let diabetes hold me back, I was still diagnosed with depression and anxiety in 2011. It's not easy living with constant fingerpricks and injections, highs and lows, fears and anticipations, stigmas and stereotypes.
I was introduced to Beyond Type 1 last year and, trust me, this organization gets it. Beyond Type 1 has beautifully designed, easy to understand articles and infographics to provide support for families affected by diabetes and educacte the general public about Type 1 Diabetes. Not to mention, Beyond Type 1 has created a social network available on smartphones for those affected by Type 1. For the first time in my life, I don't feel alone. Beyond Type 1 has given me a home. For that, I cannot thank them enough. The 4 amazing founders (1 of them being Nick Jonas) have changed my entire outlook on Type 1 Diabetes. I'm not a patient or an outcast. I am a badass, and I am thriving.
Beyond Type 1 is a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with a chronic disease. By educating the global community about this autoimmune disease, as well as providing resources and support for those living with Type 1, we will bridge the gap from diagnosis to cure, empowering people to both live well today and funding a better tomorrow. We are here to disrupt diabetes.
